"On a scale of 1-10, I would say today Goa is at a 5. And this is all thanks to the efforts of a few individuals. Had it not been for them, Goa would be probably be at a 2 or 3. But certainly this is not enough. A 50 percent is hardly commendable, especially when Goa's image is not one of concrete and cement. Our State is all about greenery and beaches.
I am a builder and I know development, infrastructure and mining is all essential but along with this, agriculture and water conservation are equally important.
Therefore according to me, the key to improving our soon-to-be-deplorable situation is education. We have to start educating the younger generation and instill in their system that we can change our surroundings. No doubt they are taught environmental social science in schools but I think the focus should be doing away with this 'nimby' (not in my backyard) attitude.
This is a big problem in Goa- 'just because environmental pollution doesn't affect my home, so it is not my problem'.
People should look at it as, it is my GOA that is being affected." |
